Dondra Head Lighthouse, Sri Lanka 29 Mar 2017
About this photo
Dondra Head Lighthouse in Dondra, Sri Lanka, lies on the southernmost point of the island, casting light over the Indian Ocean and the well-used nautical route off this coast. The lighthouse was built in 1890 out of granite rock and steel imported from the United Kingdom, which has been painted white.
Visitors must climb 196 steps to reach the top of the lighthouse, where you can see across to the horizon of the Indian Ocean, along the Sri Lankan coast and to the town of Dondra. The light at the top, which flashes every five seconds, projects to 28 nautical miles and stands at a height of 50-metres.
