Yamdrok Lake, Tibet 15 Apr 2017
About this photo
Snowy mountains rise on the perimeter of Yamdrok Lake in Tibet, which you can visit on Insight Guides’ Tantalising Tibet holiday. Buddhists in Tibet believe the lake to be sacred, helping them to find the reincarnated soul of the Dalai Lama. After a Dalai Lama dies, senior monks journey to the lake to chant, pray and throw holy objects into the water to gain the reflection of the specific location of the deceased Dalai Lama's soul.
This is one of three sacred lakes in Tibet, along with Lake Nam and Lake Manasarovar. The blue water of Yamdrok lake is fed by many mountain falls, it is home to numerous fresh fish and has one outlet to the west, which houses the biggest hydropower station in Tibet.
