About this photo
Hunts Mesa is one of two viewing points from where you can see across the vast Monument Valley floor in the Navajo Tribal Park, situated on the Arizona-Utah border. Rising high from the valley floor are the iconic sandstone buttes made up of three main layers: Organ Rock Shale, de Chelly Sandstone and Moenkopi Shale. They are the remains of rocky mountains which have been eroded by water and wind over time. The largest stands 300 metres high.
