About this photo

Rowers transport Buddha images from village to village throughout the 20-day long Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival on Inle Lake, Myanmar. The festival starts on the first day of the waxing moon of Thadingyut and ends on the 3rd day of the full moon. This is September/ October on the Western calendar.

Gilded barges carry the images clockwise around the lake with the main stop being the town of Nyaung Shwe where pilgrims gather to venerate the statues. The fifth statue remains in the Hpaung Daw U Pagoda, guarding their resting place. Visit the villages on the shores on Inle Lake on Insight Guides' Myanmar's Ancient Treasures trip.
