Sunset view of Torii gate, Miyajima, Japan 09 May 2016
Posted on 09 May 2016
About this photo
The large crimson torii (shrine gate), rising out of the sea off the island of Miyajima in southern Japan, is probably the most familiar Japanese cultural icon and representative of Shintoism. The current gate was built in 1874, but a similar torii has lured visitors for seven centuries. It is especially breathtaking during the evening.
