Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city 09 Feb 2017
About this photo
Sitting in the confluence of the Yarlung Tsangpo and Nyangchu Rivers is the city of Shigatse, situated in the historical Tsang province of Tibet, China. The name Shigatse (Xigazê) means ‘fertile land’ and was given to the city, located in the river basin, as it is home to some of the most arable lands in Tibet.
A beautiful variety of landscapes surrounds Shigatse with cultivated land, pastures, snow-capped mountains and lush forests. There are a number of natural attractions here too including glaciers, hot springs and, of course, the gigantic Mount Everest. Monasteries and temples are in abundance throughout Tibet's second-largest city. Explore Shigatse for yourself on Insight Guides' Tantalising Tibet holiday.
