About this photo
Hanoi is often referred to as the 'City of Lakes'. With low lying land, and the capital's location on the right bank of the Red River, it's clear how the lakes formed and the city became known as such. Throughout the summer (June – September) many of the lakes are covered with flowering water lilies which are often harvested by locals to sell. The largest lake in Hanoi is West Lake, while the most infamous is the Sword Lake. See these lakes and more on Insight Guides' Vietnam - Hanoi to Halong trip.
