Rainbow mountains, Zhangye Danxia, China 07 Feb 2017
About this photo
Rainbows creep out of the red rock mountains of Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, China. Visit between June and September when the light rain and sunlight encourage the vividness of the rainbows caused by the weathered strata. Minerals have been deposited here over millions of years forming layers now exposed by time, wind and rain carving the mountains into an eclectic mix of jagged, smooth and flat rocks.
During sunset, the colours continuously change creating the best visiting time; reach one of the viewing platforms to see the light dance on the mountains as the sun sets behind them. Add a trip to the rainbow mountains and discover more of what China has to offer on any of Insight Guides' trips to China.
