About this photo
Our Lady of the Pillar Basilica dominates the Ebro River bank in Zaragoza, Spain. Building of this Baroque-style basilica started in 1681 by order of King Charles II of Spain, taking five years to complete. However, it was not the imposing structure you see today. In 1725 the basilica was extended to its current size of 130 metres long and 67 metres wide. An image of the Virgin Mary is housed in the holy chapel and much venerated.
