About this photo
Mariachi is a style of traditional Mexican folk music, recognised by Unesco as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The word is thought to come from either mariage (French for wedding) or mariagero (Galician for a wedding musician). Mariachi encompasses eight elements, all of which make up this tradition. The elements include the singing style, performance style and clothing which is based on the charro suit (the traditional Jalisco state cowboy attire). Visit Mexico and see the Mariachi bands on Insight Guides' Mexico City to the Yucatán trip.
