Ik Kil Cenote, Chichen Itza, Mexico 08 May 2017

About this photo
Ik Kil is just one of the many cenotes found on the Yucatán peninsula. Cenotes can be huge pools open to the sky (where a cave roof has fallen in, centuries ago) or dark tunnels leading down to subterranean canals.
Ik Kil is open to the sky allowing light to warm the water which lays 26 metres below ground level. Vines grow from vegetation on the earth's surface, falling deep into the cenote until they touch the water, this, added to the unusual rock formations carved into the walls which surround the pool, creates an exotic, otherworldly feel. Swim in the Cenotes of the Yucatan on Insight Guides' The Yucatán: Ruins and Haciendas trip.
