The Great Wall of China at sunset 11 May 2017
About this photo
The sun sets over the hilly northern border of historical China, casting a golden hue over the lush green terrain which is split by the meandering Great Wall. The wall was built using a combination of stone, brick wood and mud in order to protect China from nomadic groups. Building started in the 7th century, the wall was continually added to and repaired throughout the Qin Shi Huang and Ming dynasties. Much of the Great Wall of China has fallen into disrepair but the section north of Beijing is both accessible and spectacular. See the less-crowded Mutianyu section on Day 3 of Insight Guides' The best of China trip.
