The fictional village of Hobbiton is set in the small New Zealand town of Matamata. You'll find Matamata at the base of the Kaimai Ranges, around a two-hour drive from Auckland. For fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies, a trip to Matamata is a great day trip and way to explore the rural north islands. Props such as the small thatched cottages are dotted around the hillsides, and have become permanent features of the landscape.
