Sofia, Bulgaria: Men jump into freezing lake waters for a wooden cross at Epiphany day celebration.

During the celebrations of the Orthodox feast of Epiphany (the celebration of the baptism of Jesus Christ) in Bulgaria a wooden crucifix is thrown into an ice-cold lake by an Eastern Orthodox priest. Young men jump into the water, following the cross and pushing cubes of ice away as they enter. It is believed the one who retrieves the wooden cross will be healthy and freed of evil spirits.
