Obelisco de Buenos Aires monument, Argentina 02 Mar 2017
About this photo
Plaza de la Republica lights up at night with headlights from cars rushing past and the facades of the Obelisco de Buenos Aires monument illuminated.
The plaza is placed at the intersection of three major roads, Ninth of July Avenue, Corrientes Avenue and Diagonal Norte, which run through the capital's centre. In this plaza stands the Obelisco de Buenos Aires built in 1936 to commemorate the fourth centenary of the first foundation of the city. Constructed using concrete and Olaen white stone, the structure was completed in 31 days, on 23rd May 1936.
The site where the Obelisco de Buenos Aries stands was once the site of St Nicholas of Bari church where the Argentinean flag was first officially raised in Buenos Aries, an act that is commemorated on the north face of the monument.
