About this photo
When the British took South Africa from the Dutch, the slave trade and slavery were abolished. Emancipated slaves, originally from various other countries including Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka formed a new community on Signal Hill overlooking Cape Town. Also referred to as the Malay Quarter, Bo-Kaap is known for its brightly coloured houses, its small, steep cobbled streets and the calls to prayer from muezzins. To learn more about life for emancipated slaves, visit the Bo-Kaap Museum (part of the South African Cultural Museum) on Insight Guides’ Cape Amazing: Cape Town Explored trip.
