Parque del Buen Retiro, or the Park of the Pleasant Retreat, is one of the biggest parks in Madrid, with a total area of 1.4 km2 (350 acres).The park began life a retreat for the royal family back in the 16th century. Since its inception, it was been expanded in every direction, before finally being made a public park in the 19th century.
Today, the park is a major tourist attraction, and is filled with beautiful sculptures, monuments, galleries, a peaceful lake and much more.
