About this photo
A primitive Venetian-style labyrinth of canals, canoes, and stores makes up the shanty town of Belén which is situated at a confluence of rivers in the Peruvian Amazon. Belén is the centre for an incredible variety of Amazon products: exotic fruits, fish, turtles meat, edible frogs, herbal medicines, and waterfowl. Plowing the waterways are a plethora of small canoe-taxis paddled by iquiteños, some as young as five years old.
