About this photo

Held in the third week of January, the Ati-Atihan festival is the Philippines' most famous fiesta, with colourful parades, traditional costumes, music and drumming. The origins of the festival date back to 1212 when 10 Malays fleeing Borneo were granted settlement by the Aetas, or Ati, people of Panay Island. A religious meaning has gradually been added, with the festival eventually becoming religious and celebrating the infant Jesus.
