Colombia has it all: a Caribbean coastline, a lush green interior, and seductive, cool cities. It also has its fair share of great places to stay, from sophisticated hotels to romantic boutiques in rustic colonial buildings. Here is our round-up of some of the best around the country:

1. Four Seasons, Bogotá

The luxurious Four Seasons Casa Medina in Bogotá is widely known as being one of the swankiest places to stay in the city and justifiably so. It's housed in a beautiful stately building with beamed ceilings and white-washed walls. Rooms are sleekly colonial in style and offer all of life's little luxuries. Nestled in the heart of the gastronomic quarter, attractions such as the old town of La Candelaria and the shopping district are easily accessible.

2. Hotel Boutique Sazagua, Coffee Cultural Landscape, Risaralda

The Sazagua Hotel Boutique is situated in the heart of the UNESCO Cultural Coffee Landscape: an area of outstanding natural beauty. The look is very much countryside lodge with dark wooden beamed ceilings and floors, and open verandahs encasing internal courtyards. Rooms are bright and comfortable with large antique beds and crisp white linens and en-suite bathrooms. Make the most of the pool and spa or relax in the colourful gardens.

3. Hotel Hacienda Balandu, Jardin

About four hours south of Medellín, Jardin, or the 'Garden of Eden' as it is known, is one of Colombia's most beautiful spots. Hotel Hacienda Balandu offers one of the best places to stay in the area with 24 comfortable rooms, all with telephone, TV and minibar. Outside there is a heated pool and, for some pampering, there is a sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi.

4. Anandá Hotel Boutique, Cartagena

The lovely Anandá Hotel is one of Cartagena's gems. It's modern and luxurious but retains an authentic Colombian vibe thanks to its sensitively restored building. It's in the heart of Cartagena de Indias and a short hop to the city's historic attractions. Rooms are white with heavy-beamed ceilings, but generous proportions ensure they feel airy and fresh, with lovely attached bathrooms. Make the most of the restaurant, pool and rooftop Jacuzzi.

5. Hotel Dann Monasterio, Popayán

Hotel Dann Monasterio enjoys a lovely setting in a former Franciscan convent. This five-star hotel features luxurious rooms, all have a private balcony and are furnished with colonial-style furniture, plus all the mod cons. Glorious marble bathrooms are en-suite. For ultimate relaxation, there's a pool and spa too.

6. Akawanka Lodge, San Agustín

The rustic hilltop Akawanka Lodge lies just outside of lovely San Agustin. You're in prime Colombian countryside here, surrounded by lush greenery and breathtaking mountain scenery. Rooms are sweet and traditional with an arty vibe and you can soak up the views and fresh mountain air from your private wooden deck. There's a restaurant and bar serving organic produce on site. Plus, San Agustín's national parks are on your doorstep.

7. Punta Faro, Isla Mucura

Last but not least, the jaw-droppingly gorgeous Hotel Punta Faro is a veritable tropical island getaway. Dreamy thatched roofed huts are set amid tropical greenery and overlook the inviting Caribbean Sea. All rooms have massive wooden beds with fresh white linens, air conditioning, TV, safe and minibar, as well as a private deck with loungers. Partake in watersports aplenty by day, relax with a cocktail come sundown.
