Bird Watching Tour (2:00 p.m.)

For bird-watching enthusiasts, Hotel Savegre is second to none; San Gerardo de Dota is mentioned in the book ‘Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die’. On arrival in the cloud forest, you will be greeted with a morning birdsong, which heralds the start of an amazing experience as you enjoy short walks around the hotel and private reserve.Over breakfast, the hummingbirds offer an indication of what to expect during the day. With over 170 species listed, and some endemic in the area, this really is birding heaven. Mornings, just after dawn, are the best time to spot most species.

Highland Bird & Paramo

This outing is the gateway to discovering Los Quetzales National Park. Established in July 2005, it covers 5000 hectares (12,350 acres) and boasts three forest zones and 14 eco-systems. Its objective is to preserve highland forests and protect the natural water sources.After meeting your guide at the park’s front desk, you will head out to explore the Continental Divide separating the eco-systems between North and South America. The tour begins with a search for endemic bird species while your guide explains the natural history of this unique area.After a short walk from where you park the car, you will discover one of the most impressive panoramic views you will ever get to see: on the right is the Talamanca Mountain Range and the Central Volcanic Cordillera; in front, the central Pacific coast; a bit to the left, the southern Pacific coast leading towards Valle del General and Osa Peninsula; and behind you, none other than Chirripó, Costa Rica's highest peak.After exploring the area, you will head back to the Park office and walk along short trails to look for any birds missing from your list. Fill your camera with memorable photos and your mind with unforgettable memories before you return to your hotel.

Kayaking On Hatillo Mangrove Forest

Mangrove swamps are some of the richest environments in the world. During this tour, you will be able to spot a great variety of birds, including the bare-throated tiger-heron, little blue heron, brown pelican and royal tern. You will also see mammals like the white-faced capuchin monkey, three and two-toed Sloth, northern raccoon and the white-nosed coati. Reptiles such as the green iguana, Jesus Christ lizard and the boa constrictor snake calls these swamps home. Six different species of crabs can also be spotted amongst the mangroves.

Corcovado National Park Hike

Protecting approximately 54,539 hectares of humid rainforest and 2,400 hectares of ocean, Corcovado has become an international attraction since it was founded in 1975. It is home to almost 400 species of birds, 140 species of mammals and 116 species of amphibians and reptiles and 6000 species of insects. A total of 6 natural eco-systems have been identified within the park and it protects endangered species such as the jaguar, puma, crocodile, tapir, poison dart frogs and scarlet macaws.

Caño Island Boat Tour

Caño Island Biological Reserve is located on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, 15km off Osa Peninsula. The island is bordered by white sandy beaches and protected by a reef. This makes the island one of the best spots in the country for scuba diving and snorkelling. The waters here offer visibility of up to 20m (65ft) all year round. They are abundant with marine wildlife, such as colorful fish, turtles, manta rays, dolphins and whales.
