Dublin travel guide
Dublin has seen phenomenal growth since the 1990s, witnessing a huge programme of redevelopment and a surge in the economy. The Celtic Tiger’s roar may be a bit muted as a result of world recession, but Dubliners are a naturally optimistic bunch, and this vibrant cosmopolitan city, with its fascinating history, individual ways and outgoing people, is still very enjoyable to visit.
Top places to visit in Dublin
Nothing can overshadow the impact of superb Georgian buildings such as Trinity College and Custom House, and the appeal of the city’s first-class museums and galleries, the proud legacy of the Victorian age, continues apace.
There are, however, some new kids on the block, bringing a new dimension to the skyline of the city. The Docklands and Grand Canal developments have introduced a different image with gleaming modern office blocks, cultural venues, residential apartments and shopping malls. The once depressed and run-down areas are now shiny new beacons of innovation, all with the latest ‘green’ credentials. Dublin looks set to offer future visitors a perfect blend of old and new, of tradition and modernism, and after several centuries of turning its back on the River Liffey, the waterways are once again at the heart of the city.
The various localities can deliver a totally different outlook on the city. If you like to party and be right in the thick of things, the natural choice is Temple Bar. The Georgian district, around St Stephen’s Green and Merrion Square, offers a more genteel atmosphere, with some delectable townhouses within a few feet of the city’s main attractions and excellent shopping. The ultra-modern Docklands district has popular gastropubs, chic cocktail bars and trendy restaurants right on the doorstep.
Transport in Dublin
Although most of the major sights, attractions and entertainment are located within the city-centre core, public transport is excellent, making most places you want to visit within easy reach. Beyond the city environs there’s another world, and the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) light-rail system provides the opportunity to explore the coastal settlements and beautiful countryside.
