Lakshadweep: overview

The tropical paradise of Lakshadweep offers coral reefs, white, shell-sand beaches and lush palm groves.

Scattered 200–400km (124–248 miles) west of the Keralan coast, the Lakshadweep Islands are a classic coral atoll. Some speculate that the name derives from the estimates of early sailors, who imagined at least 100,000 (one lakh) of these little islets. In fact, there are only 22 (depending on how they are counted), of which just 11 are inhabited – by some 60,600 people.

Bangaram

Foreigners are only permitted to visit one of the Lakshadweep's islands –Bangaram; a couple of flights per day leave Ernakulam’s Nedumbassery airport for the air strip at Agatti Island, from where you’re transferred by boat or helicopter to Lakshadweep’s one and only hotel, CGH chain’s Bangaram Island Resort, situated on a beautiful lagoon. The marine life on the surrounding reefs is impressive. As well as a huge variety of corals, there are over 1,000 species of fish.
